How digital is Canada's built environment? Nobody can say.

Clarity Builders is running The Tally: the first national survey to cover every role in the built environment, from the organizations that own and operate buildings and infrastructure to those that design, build, maintain and supply them. It takes 10 to 14 minutes, runs in English and French, answers are confidential, and every respondent can receive the results.

The numbers Canada has point one way

Canada needs 430,000 to 480,000 new homes a year through 2035, roughly double what it currently completes (CMHC, June 2025). The industry must recruit 306,200 workers by 2034 as a generation retires (BuildForce Canada, July 2026). Residential construction productivity fell 37.3% between 2001 and 2023, while the wider business sector rose 12.5% (Statistics Canada, February 2026). Yet only 9.2% of construction businesses report using AI, against 19.2% across all industries (Statistics Canada, June 2026). The arithmetic only works if the sector changes how it works.

The number Canada is missing is yours

No national survey has ever measured how digital this sector is. Not once. The closest anyone came was 2019: that study reached fewer than 400 people, most of them already working in BIM, and it did not report owners, operators or government as groups. Its authors asked for that to be fixed in the next national survey, and there was no next survey. Subcontractors and suppliers, most of the industry by firm count, have never been measured at all. Seven years of policy, procurement reform and public investment have been argued and approved since, on evidence that does not exist. Your answers are how it gets built.

This survey is about you, whatever you own or build

One senior response per organization, from anyone with a stake in the built environment. Organizations holding several profiles, or spanning regions, can send more than one. That includes the organizations that rarely get asked: school boards, hospitals, banks, retailers, municipalities, utilities, landlords. If your organization owns, occupies or manages even one building, this survey is about you. So are the results.

What you get back

Choose to receive the results and you will see the first national picture of digital practice in Canada’s built environment: where organizations like yours stand, and what clients and peers are starting to require. Your individual answers stay confidential and are reported only in aggregate, and no organization is identified in any output.
